Jackie Fox Retires as Trustee

I am in that curious state that some of you will know. I have retired from being a parish priest in London and moved to North Yorkshire. I am in a time of sifting, sorting and finding direction.

One thing that seemed to be clear was that it is time for me to hand on the role of Chair of BET. It has been a privilege to be so deeply involved with the people and the work we have sought to maintain in Lesotho. None of it would be possible without the committed and dedicated committee in that land, and the loyalty of Motselisi; equally the committee in the UK has had to struggle to grasp the changing circumstances and demands in the schools and colleges of Southern Africa. My personal thanks to everyone for giving me the privilege to be so deeply involved.
I hand onto Philippa Bird, who has been deeply involved as our treasurer, she has a wider grasp of issues and a desire to further the work of ‘technical education in Lesotho’. Our object has always been to give individuals the training and skills to earn a living, lifting themselves and in time their families from crippling poverty. It is my prayer that this work should continue to have an impact.

As I write this there is news in the paper of a ‘huge’ diamond being found in the Letsing mine in Lesotho. It is likely to bring great wealth, but almost certainly, not to the local people. It is all too easy in this time of economic confusion to succumb to the belief that the real riches are the wealth that banks produce...the riches of Lesotho are its people, special, loved by God, yet often so ignored by the international scene.
Although I am handing on the work of the trust, my prayer continues to be with you all and for Lesotho.
God, bless Africa.
Guard her children,
guide her leaders
and give her peace;
for Jesus Christ’s sake.

Jackie

New Trustee

Rebecca was a member of the original chaplaincy group that went to Lesotho in 1981 and still has photos of herself dressed like Adam Ant (for those of you old enough to remember him) mixing up concrete on site. She married a fellow student who also went on the trip so it was a significant trip for her in more ways than one! Rebecca now works at Henley Business School in Henley-on-Thames where she teaches and runs programmes. Rebecca is still married to Simon and they have 2 daughters, Helen and Rosie.

Thanks

There is a wonderful old story
Written in a time long long ago
It is the gospel according to
Matthew, Mark, Luke and John

The gospels were written to show us
The power of God's love divine
May that story be told again

In the writing of your community
People read and admire the gospel
The people you fed and the
Students you taught, above all are
The orphans and the poor of Lesotho

They read your gospel with love so
Inspiring and true
But what do they say and
Think of your Gospel according to you

Know that you are writing a gospel
A chapter every day
By deeds that you do
By words that you say
By thouhgts that you have/had
And countless gifts to Lesotho children

God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit
Bless you always, may I thank you for your help you had given to our
Students for Computer training and for Rapuleng Mokoaleli for carpentry

So far, those who completed their computer training here are all working
Therefore it is worth while as now they can earn their living

Thank you, thank you
